Synopsis
Preview performances February 25 – 28; Opening Night is February 28.
This history play concerns the 44 B.C.E. conspiracy against the Roman dictator Julius Caesar, his assassination, and the defeat of the conspirators at the Battle of Philippi.
STC’s production of Julius Caesar applies a modern concept to this classic text: The Roman Republic was a place where money and politics were nearly synonymous, and comparisons between pre-Empire Rome and modern America are easy to make. The production examines what the new American oligarchy might look like in the very near future–a place where the amount of money required to run a successful campaign requires a politician to be a commercial “brand,” and a time where the line between popular celebrity and politics is entirely blurred. In the spirit of the diverse parties represented in America’s modern political system, the roles of Cassius and Casca (traditionally played by men) are played by women in this production, in line with STC’s commitment to non-traditional casting.
The production will host hundreds of students at STC to experience Shakespeare live on stage, supporting STC’s mission to be the leader in integrating professional theatre with theatre arts education. Julius Caesar is also part of STC’s “Annual Bard Jubilee,” which includes special events, like a sonnet writing class and competition and a panel discussion at the Sacramento Poetry Center, in honor of the “Bard of Avon,” William Shakespeare.
